Back to Calendar of Events

With a long military history, we commemorate all Australians who served and died in war and on operational service. On ANZAC Day we commemorate those who have served their country with a special dawn service, followed by a Gunfire Breakfast, free Anzac-themed activities for kids, Oliver Hill Guns & Tunnel tours and more.

Dawn Service
Presided over by officers from The Royal Australian Navy Number Two Flying School, the beautiful dawn service commences at 6am on the grassed area outside Dome Cafe & Aristos Waterfront Restaurant.

Gunfire Breakfast
The dawn service will be followed by our free ANZAC Day Gunfire Breakfast cooked by the Rottnest Voluntary Guides Association.

Free kids activities
There will be a bundle of free kids activities for families to enjoy for the rest of the morning, including:

  • Military themed kids activities at Kingstown Barracks
  • Activity booklets (collect from the Visitor Centre)
  • ANZAC biscuit making
  • Cricket (serving soldiers used to play this to keep their mind off the war)
  • Sand art
  • Send postcards to serving soldiers
  • More to come...

Oliver Hill Gun & Tunnels tour
There will be $19 Train and Tunnel tours running throughout the morning at 8:30am, 9:30am and 10:30am. Train and Tunnel tours run for a duration of 1.5hrs.
Ferry and tour packages available through Rottnest Express and Rottnest Fast Ferries.

Photographic Exhibition: Capturing the Enemy
Travel back to Rottnest Island in World War 1. Between 1914 and 1915 Rottnest Island was used as an internment camp for German sailors taken as prisoners of war and Australian residents from Austrian Slav nations who were identified as enemy aliens. This exhibition features a unique collection of photographs and objects, capturing the daily lives of those interned on the island and their guards from the Australian Imperial Forces, some of whom later went on to fight on the Western Front. Exhibition opens ANZAC Day!

Stay the Anzac Week
Stay 5 nights in the charming Caroline Thomson Cabins from 21st-26th April for just $615. Cabins sleep up to 6 people!
Spend the week relaxing on stunning Rottnest Island and reflecting on the important role the Island played as part of Western Australia's defence system. Take the time to explore historical sites such as the Oliver Hill Gun and Tunnels, Kingstown Barracks and the Bickley Battery.
