In line with our commitment to reconciliation and the recognition of the important Aboriginal history on the Island, the Rottnest Island Authority (RIA) will be offering a number of events in acknowledgment of National Reconciliation Week (NRW), running from 27 May to 3 June including:
Aboriginal Heritage Tour:
A daily Aboriginal Heritage tour will be taking place from the 29th of May to the 2nd of June. The tour will be guided by the RIA Aboriginal Heritage Officer who is also a Whadjuk Noongar man. Tours will leave from the Salt Store at 12.30pm and guests are encouraged to make the most of this opportunity by registering their interest at the Visitors Centre by 12.00pm each day.
The tour involves a walk through the main settlement, visits to the major Aboriginal heritage sites associated with the former Aboriginal Prison and will cover the following topics;
· Cultural significance of Wadjemup (Rottnest Island) pre-colonisation
· Post-colonisation and the Rottnest Island Aboriginal Establishment
· Current situation: Aboriginal Heritage management on Wadjemup today
· Looking to the future: Hand back of the Quod in 2018 and the future of Aboriginal Heritage management
Art Exhibition at the Salt Store:
There will be an Art Exhibition in the Salt Store from the 27th of May to 3rd of June with Aboriginal Art for sale. Open hours will be 10.30am to 3.45pm.
