Frequently Asked Questions

Whether travelling by bus, bike or on foot, we advise that you bring a hat, sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes and a water bottle. Wear lightweight, breathable clothing for comfort in summer, and be sure to pack a beach towel and swimsuit to enjoy the stunning marine sanctuaries that surround the island. In autumn, winter and spring, it’s best to pack a jumper and rain jacket or umbrella. Adventurous travellers may also like to bring a wetsuit to enjoy snorkelling or surfing in the cooler months.

The Quokka Coaches Island Explorer hop-on hop-off bus service and tours, as well as the Rottnest Express Discovery Tour, often book out during peak periods. We recommend booking your bus ticket online in advance, which will make it easier to board the bus on the island.

If the bus is fully booked during your visit, there are great alternative ways to explore the island. The accommodation shuttle is available to all visitors, allowing easy travel between the Thomson Bay and Geordie Bay settlements. You can also hire a bike or electric bike, book a private transfer with Quokka Hopper, or simply walk – there is a lot you can see on foot.

Within a 15-minute walk from the main settlement, you can find The Basin, a picturesque spot for snorkelling, or head to Bathurst Lighthouse which overlooks the stunning Pinky Beach. Alternatively, you can discover the beauty of the island’s centre, watching quokkas in their natural habitat by Garden Lake or enjoying the panoramic view across the lakes from Vlamingh Lookout.
