Idyllic bayside views, lookout points and roaming kwoka (quokka) sightings. This mini loop cycle trail offers the perfect snapshot of Wadjemup / Rottnest Island by bike.
Short in distance but large in adventure, this loop can be completed in as little as 30-minutes (depending on your level of pedal power). Or spend hours hopping between beloved bays and revelling in the rich biodiversity of the island’s inland areas. Along the way, there are opportunities for a bite to eat to satisfy appetites of all sizes. Don’t forget to keep your senses switched on to the sounds and sightings of local fauna.
Distance: 4 km
Time: 30 minutes
With just four kilometres of winding roads and pathways, this loop is ideal for little legs or those looking to ease into the lengthier trails that encircle the island. The average time to complete the loop depends on your pedalling speed, pit-stops you make and how energised you and your travel companions feel.
The adventure begins from your choice of starting location. Take to the trail from your accommodation, if you’re staying in any of the options north of the settlement. For those on a day trip, set off from the main settlement.
The Basin beckons as a welcome first point to disembark. Here, the pristine, protected waters entice all to wade in and share the sea with an abundance of fish species that dart beneath the surface. Slip on a mask and snorkel to spot them amongst the pink, purple and brown-hued coral.
Conveniently close to The Basin, HAVZA is open daily (seasonal). Treat yourselves to your favourite frothy drink to fuel the rest of the journey. Or grab a sweet scoop of Simmo’s ice cream to savour as you perch on the soft sand. If you arrive later in the afternoon, you can enjoy tapas overlooking the iconic shores of The Basin.
If you continue the route along the coast, the sapphire waters of Longreach Bay will soon appear. This bay is a popular swimming spot for families, with its calm conditions and soft sands that foster the perfect place for play. A few extra minutes of pedalling will take you up to Fay’s Bay. This little cove is nestled within the northernmost tip of the island, offering a sheltered spot to swim and snorkel. The environment here sets a striking scene, with limestone crops on the shore and green seagrass softly swaying in the sea.
Back on your bikes? Make tracks towards Geordie’s Cafe and Art Gallery. This charming cafe is open daily from the early morning until evening, serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner. Take an extended pause from your pedalling adventures here with a delicious meal or snack and refreshing drink. There’s also a playground out the front, just waiting for any extra energy to be released. For additional takeaway snacks or supplies, swing by Geordie Bay General Store.
Before the trail veers away from the coast, take the opportunity to swim, snorkel or just enjoy the dazzling surrounds of Geordie Bay. Gaze out at the serene sight of boats bobbing in the bay, while casting your eyes towards the dunes, too. Curious quokkas have been known to make an appearance here, so keep a look out.
Follow the loop inland for a change of scenery. You’ll pass by the outskirts of the local golf course and weave around the kabikarning (salt lake) systems, which are home to local wildlife. These wetlands are a favourite area for birdwatchers, with different species flourishing throughout the year.
Your journey reaches its peak at Vlamingh Lookout: one of the most scenic vantage points on Wadjemup. Leave your bikes at the base of the hill and enjoy the short walk to the summit. Spend a moment or two marvelling in 360-degree views of the island, including the scenery you’ve cycled past on your travels.
Descend from the lookout and head to the Garden Lake boardwalk nearby. Enjoy a purposeful moment of quiet, respectful observation as the quokkas hop about in fields of grass and samphire. From here, it’s just a short cycle back to the main settlement, where your day of island exploration can wind down, or begin its second wind.
