Summer

Long, languid days await on Wadjemup / Rottnest Island in summer. This is the season for slipping into refreshing waters, lounging on pristine sands and savouring the view of a sky so blue.

Rottnest Island in summer

Summer encompasses the months of December, January and February in Australia. December welcomes the arrival of a new Noongar season, Birak, which is known as the first summer. During the months of December and January, shades of red and brown begin to blanket the island, contrasting with the blues and greens of the water. February begins with the Noongar season of Bunuru: the second summer. This is the hottest period of the season and sees warm easterly winds heat up Wadjemup during the day followed by late sea breezes which provide welcome relief in the afternoons.

Weather to expect during summer on Rottnest Island

Summer on the island is a few degrees cooler than the mainland of Perth, with average daily temperatures generally ranging from mid-to-high 20°C. However, it can get much warmer, with heatwaves observed on the mainland often extending to the island. Temperatures of up to 40°C can be experienced in February, during which time there’s no better way to experience the island than dipping into the transparent waters of the many beautiful bays and beaches. The water is also surprisingly warm (while remaining refreshing), thanks to the Leeuwin Current which flows along the west coast of Australia and creates summer sea surface temperatures of around 23°C. Each afternoon, a refreshing breeze known as the Fremantle Doctor sweeps through. Fortunately, being an island, there is always a sheltered bay to swim in no matter which way the breeze is blowing.

Carry adequate water supplies
