Winter

As the cool change settles in, so too does a sense of calm upon the island. Come and discover the many wonders of Wadjemup / Rottnest Island that appear during winter.

Rottnest Island in winter

Winter encompasses the months of June, July and August in Australia. From June, we enter a new Noongar season called Makuru that spans across June and July. During Makuru, the skies open and bring the rains that awaken an abundance of wildlife and alter the natural environment, perfect for exploring on crisp, bright winter days. Djilba, the Noongar season of the second rains, arrives in August and sees winter winds easing and quokka joeys starting to peer out from their mother’s pouch during this time.

Weather to expect during winter on Rottnest Island

The winter months bring cooler temperatures that are (surprisingly) a few degrees warmer than what’s experienced in Perth, both on land and at sea. In fact, average land and sea temperatures are similar, with average daytime temperatures around 19°C and the sea surface hovering around 18°C throughout winter. This allows tropical marine species to live around the island, while also making it more inviting to wade into the water with a wetsuit and experience the aquatic activities on offer. The on-land conditions are particularly favourable for hiking and cycling your way around the island, allowing you to enjoy the cooler air and gentle rhythm of the winter season at your own pace without the heat of the summer sun. With sunny winter days being a common occurrence, it’s the perfect time for exploring the island’s natural beauty.
